Description
Downan Bridge is an 1835 bridge spanning the River Livet, located at Bridgend of Livet. It is a single-span structure built of high rubble with a segmental arch ring, the arch springing from natural rock abutments. Shallow end buttresses are present, and these have a later rendered cope with a metal guard rail. The approximate span is 55 feet. The bridge is now bypassed by a modern bridge and replaced an earlier bridge that stood upstream, which was damaged during floods in 1829. The bridge is situated within the Cairngorms National Park and is referenced in the Imperial Gazetteer of Scotland.
