Description
North Lodge, located within the Dinnet House Policies, dates from around 1890. This striking single-storey and attic lodge house features three bays, with crow-stepped gables topped with finials and a bowed entrance bay that is corbelled to a square at the gabled first floor. Originally designed in a cruciform plan, it was extended to the west in the later 20th century. The building is constructed from large granite blocks with contrasting pointing, a base course, and a string course at the corbelled attic gable. Notable architectural features include a moulded doorpiece, a canted window with a swept polygonal roof, stone mullions, and chamfered reveals.
The entrance elevation faces east towards the drive and includes a bowed central bay with a boarded timber door, a plate glass fanlight, and pilastered jambs, along with flanking corbels and a window in the gablehead above. There are additional windows in the set-back flanking bays and a canted window in the crow-stepped gable on the east (road) elevation.
The windows feature a 9-pane and 8-pane glazing pattern over plate glass in timber non-traditional top-hung designs. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are coped ashlar stacks with cans, ashlar-coped skews with moulded skewputts, and cast iron rainwater goods.
