Description
Kinrara House is a two-storey, sprawling country house that dates back to around 1800, with later additions by John Paterson around 1814 and 1836. The building underwent significant alterations by Reginald Fairlie in 1939. The exterior is now harled.
The entrance front features a U-shaped plan with a five-bay inner elevation facing north. It has an off-centre left door, which was originally mirrored on the right, and is part of Duchess Jane's original picturesque cottage from circa 1800. The wings of the house partly belong to this early period, with extensions made around 1814 and an additional wing to the east, which was originally a single storey, added around 1836.
The garden front has a five-bay elevation with bowed return end bays, the latter of which were originally single storey. It includes three tall tripartite windows, with the centre window now featuring glazed doors, and a Regency-style verandah that has an arched design with lattice decoration and a tent roof. The first floor has three windows with six-pane sashes, separated by narrow dressing room windows, which are now used as a bathroom. Each storey of the bows has three tall six-pane sash windows.
In 1939, an addition was made to the southeast of the east wing, and the infill of the 1836 entrance courtyard was removed. All windows are sash and case with various glazing patterns, and there are some blind windows on the north elevations of the wings. The house has coped stacks and a slate roof.
