Description

The Steading at Alvie Manse is a building originally constructed as a two-storey, three-bay house by John MacCulloch between 1807 and 1808, with repairs made in 1834. It was significantly altered by Thomas MacKenzie between 1848 and 1849, transforming it into a three-storey, south-facing L-plan house featuring a drum tower entrance porch at the southwest re-entrant angle, which is corbelled out to form a square cap-house at the second floor. The exterior is harled with red ashlar dressings, and it includes moulded architraves around the doorway and windows, as well as a panelled door. The south gable has a canted bay window on the ground floor, with regular fenestration above, mainly consisting of two-pane glazing. The building also features crowsteps, coped end stacks, and a slate roof.

At the rear of the house, there are later tripartite windows, and a later single-storey and attic wing projects to the east.

Inside, there is a later 19th-century pine staircase with a turned balustrade and panelled square newels topped with ball finials, along with simple moulded ceiling cornices.

The steading consists of a single-storey and loft L-plan range, built of harl pointed rubble with rubble dressings and a local slate roof.
