Description

6 Airthrey Castle Yard is a single-storey Modernist house designed by Morris and Steedman between 1966 and 1967. It features an offset pair of square-plan dwellings with oversailing flat roofs, set in a picturesque woodland setting. The exterior is finished in painted render with sandstone ashlar copes and includes a deep base course that steps to the rear. The design incorporates a continuous horizontal arrangement of windows that wrap around the corners of the east and west elevations, with recessed main doorways to the north, each having overhanging roofs.

The windows predominantly consist of plate glass in timber frames, with some later French windows on the southeast elevation. The building has a deep timber platform roof, capped with an aluminium flue and covered water tanks at the centre.

Inside, the simple Modernist interior is characterized by large areas of glazing and high ceilings. The main rooms open off a central lobby and corridor lined with multiple doors, leading to a large open-plan lounge and dining area. The kitchen is located to the left of the entrance, with an additional door leading into the dining room. Throughout the interior, there are plain floor-to-ceiling architraved doorcases and timber doors, along with some original floor-to-ceiling built-in cupboards in the bedrooms.
