Description
Garden Cottage at Airthrey Castle dates from the earlier to mid 19th century. It is a single-storey building with an attic, featuring six irregular bays and a rectangular plan. Originally a row of cottages in the cottage ornee style, it has been converted into a single dwelling, situated on rising ground to the north (rear). The exterior is finished in painted render with raised painted margins and painted stone cills. The building has rectangular, finialed slate-hung timber dormers and a central gabled porch with finials, supported by engaged painted sandstone Doric columns, with rendered sides. There are doors at both the far right and left ends, and small windows at the rear, some of which are blank. The gabled ends are asymmetrical, with cyma recta skewputts perpendicular to the eastern gable.
The windows throughout are timber sash and case, with 12- and 4-pane configurations. The roof is pitched and covered with grey slates, featuring a corniced rendered central ridge stack with octagonal clay cans.
Inside, there is a principal stair located at the centre, combed ceilings in the attic, and some cast-iron grates set in timber surrounds, along with some timber shutters.
