Description
3 Airthrey Castle Yard is a single-storey, L-plan, offset semi-detached Modernist house designed by Morris and Steedman in 1966-67, incorporating earlier boundary walls. It is located in a picturesque woodland setting on rising ground within the former walled policy of Airthrey Castle. The building features oversailing flat roofs and is constructed with painted render and a coursed random rubble base course, which is deeply set at the rear. The northwest and southeast elevations are predominantly rendered.
The house has continuous runs of horizontal windows on the east and west elevations that wrap around the corners, with timber louvers over some windows, particularly on the east side. There are additional plate glass windows on the wings, which also wrap around to the stepped west end. The main doorways on the east are recessed, featuring overhanging roofs and narrow tripartite sidelights, with a secondary door to the right (north) accompanied by a bipartite window to the side.
The interior showcases a simple Modernist design with a split-level layout at the rear, characterized by large areas of glazing and high ceilings. To the right of the entrance is a utility room, with a kitchen to the left. Bedrooms are arranged along a single corridor on the far left, opening off an open-plan dining area behind the kitchen. Built-in timber cupboards underneath a window extend to the right, screening the change of level. The lounge occupies the full width of the L-plan wing, with broad steps leading down. There is a small study at the rear, featuring a sliding timber panelled screen that wraps around the corner. The doors are full height, reaching from floor to ceiling, with plain timber frames, and some original built-in cupboards in the bedrooms extend from floor to ceiling.
