Description
The Nuffield Staff Houses, located at 4 Airthrey Castle Yard on the Stirling University Campus, were designed by Morris and Steedman and built between 1966 and 1967. These single-storey Modernist houses consist of a pair of square-plan dwellings featuring oversailing flat roofs, set within a picturesque woodland setting. The exterior is finished in painted render with sandstone ashlar copes, and there is a deep base course that steps to the rear. The houses have a continuous horizontal arrangement of windows that turn the corners of the west elevations, with recessed main doorways on the east side that have overhanging roofs.
The windows are predominantly made of plate glass in timber frames, with some later additions of French windows on the southeast elevation. The deep timber platform roof is topped with an aluminium flue and has covered water tanks at the center.
Inside, the houses showcase a simple Modernist design characterized by large areas of glazing and high ceilings. The main rooms open off a central lobby and corridor, featuring a large open-plan lounge and dining area. The kitchen is located to the left of the entrance, with a further door leading into the dining room. Bedrooms are situated at the rear (west) of the house, with an additional bedroom to the right (north) of the entrance. Throughout the interior, there are plain architraved doorcases and timber doors, along with some original floor-to-ceiling built-in cupboards in the bedrooms. House No. 4 has a mirror image of the interior layout found in House No. 5.
