Description

The Principal's House at 1 Airthrey Castle Yard, built by Morris and Steedman between 1966 and 1967, is a single-storey Modernist house with an arrowhead plan. It features oversailing flat roofs and a central raised clerestory. The house is situated on a prominent precipice, with the ground sloping steeply to the southwest, within the former walled grounds of Airthrey Castle. The exterior is finished with painted render and has a coursed random rubble base course that is deeply set at the rear. The north and east elevations are predominantly rendered, with the north elevation stepped and featuring walls that enclose deeply recessed doorways to the right (west) with rectangular sidelights and timber louvers. An open carport is located to the far left (east). The east elevation has small advanced perpendicular rendered fins with tall narrow windows to the south of each fin. Continuous horizontal windows wrap around the corners of the south and west elevations.

The windows are primarily large pane plate glass in rectangular timber casement designs, with some fixed pane glazing on the east elevation and in the clerestory. The roof is a deep timber platform, topped with an aluminium flue and felt-covered water tanks at the center.

Inside, the house features a simple Modern Movement interior with largely open-plan public rooms, while private rooms are accessed from a single service corridor. The interior is characterized by large areas of glazing and high ceilings. The open-plan lounge is located at the apex of the plan and includes built-in cupboards under the windows and a wide rectangular stone hearth. The doors are full height, reaching from floor to ceiling, with plain timber frames, and some original built-in cupboards are present in the bedrooms.
