Description
This early 20th century bank, located at 2 and 4 Wellgate in Lanark, features the initials CBLD in the pediment above the entrance. The building has two storeys and an attic, constructed from polished ashlar. It is situated at a splayed angle where Castlegate meets Wellgate, showcasing a pilastered entrance topped with a heavily bracketed pediment.
The ground floor has three irregular bays on both the left and right sides, all separated by pilaster orders. To the right, there are three bipartite windows, one of which is a later single light, while the left side features two bipartite windows and a door in a narrow bay, adorned with part fluted pilasters and a panel above. All the windows are pilastered and have a continuous entablature above them.
On the first floor, there is a single light window above the main door, with bipartite windows flanking a round-headed bipartite window to the right. To the left, there are three single light windows along with a bipartite window in the outer bay, all of which are also pilastered. A cill course serves as the base for part fluted Ionic pilasters, which are paired at the splay and in the central right bay. Above this, an entablature is present, with a parapet that is interrupted by four pilastered and pedimented dormers, including two bipartite windows supported by scrolled brackets. The building is topped with a slate mansard roof.
