Description

No. 19 Cheapside is a three-storey bank building, designed by architects Milnes and France in 1885, showcasing a Palladian revival style with Baroque influences. The structure is prominently located on a corner site and is constructed of well-detailed ashlar stone. The ground floor features a grooved and banded design with vermiculation, complemented by articulating pilasters and a sill course.

The building has recessed round-headed windows, with three facing Kirkgate, a corner doorway, and three additional windows along Cheapside. The corner entrance is framed by Doric columns with vermiculated blocks, set in antis, and is topped with an architrave made of polished granite and a pediment over a blind panel. A fine ornate wrought iron gate is set within the panelled door, providing a striking contrast to the formal architecture.

The Cheapside entrance is flanked by pilasters with a Doric entablature positioned below a semi-circular fanlight. The entablature above the ground floor features a bracket cornice. The upper floors are defined by Roman Doric pilasters, which are fluted at their lower sections and rise from panelled pedestals, with doubled pilasters flanking the corner.

First-floor windows are adorned with eared architrave surrounds, bolection friezes, and alternating segmental and straight pediments, each featuring a bowed baluster balconette. The second-floor windows are set within double eared architraves and are nearly square in shape. The main entablature frieze has a string that supports consoles leading to alternating modillions of the cornice. The building is capped with a balustered parapet and pedimented chimneys, making it an important architectural feature on this corner site.
