Description
No. 26 Kirkgate is a building dating from around 1870, featuring a tall and narrow elevation with lively Italianate details. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar and stands four storeys high. The building has rusticated and panelled quoin pilasters topped with foliate caps. There are string courses and sill bands, a deep frieze, and large console brackets supporting the projecting eaves cornice, which includes a corner chimney stack that is banded and corniced. The ground floor has a shop front, while the upper floors are marked by centred tripartite windows. The first and second floors have columns with foliate caps that divide and flank the window lights. A carved scroll bracket supports a baluster balconette in front of the second-floor window, which features a segmental pediment surrounded by rinceaux and forming a female head. The plain west front retains its cornice and string courses.
