Description
The Shoulder of Mutton Public House, dated 1825, is an early example of architecture in an area that underwent significant redevelopment in the late 19th century. This three-storey building is constructed of painted small block, coursed gritstone. The upper floor features four windows set on sill courses, and there is a moulded stone eaves cornice. The windows are later 19th-century sashes. Above the main doorway, there is a window framed by a thin fluted pilaster, complete with a frieze and a shallow cornice. The ground floor has two windows flanking a six-panel door, which is topped by a stilted semi-circular arched fanlight. The doorway is accentuated by imposts leading to a small incised voussoir arch that includes a dated keystone. To the right, there is a side door, and to the left, a carriageway with a very shallow camber to the arch.
