Description
8 Milton Avenue in Cambuslang, Glasgow, was built around 1806 as a country house for John More, who was a cashier at the Royal Bank in Glasgow. The design is very "Adamitic" and resembles the work of David Hamilton. The building has two storeys with a sunk basement at the rear and features a symmetrical five-bay front with advanced and recessed wall planes. The centre bay is pedimented and advanced, with a curved ground floor that contains a circular vestibule. The original doorcase, which was gothick with windows and pinnacles, has been reconstructed from fragments and features engaged columns with banded rustication similar to the base course. Above, there is an iron-railed balcony and a tripartite window on the first floor, while the end window bays on the main front are also shallowly advanced. The exterior is now covered in thick harling, which is inappropriate, with only the lights of the curved entrance bay having margins, and these are rendered. The building has an eaves and lintel band, a main cornice, and a balustrade that is partly dismantled on the left side. The end stacks have been rebuilt. On the west gable, there are cast-iron balconies on the first floor, while the east side features a recessed full-height bay and a low bay beyond with a curved front, where there were formerly a pair. The roof has a low pitch and is covered with modern tiles, and there is an unusual stone feature at the centre apex of the roof whose purpose is unknown.
