Description

William Leiper, circa 1880. Asymmetrical villa showing

Anglo-Japanese influence. Part single storey with attic,

part 2 storeys. Snecked rubble with ashlar dressings long

and short to windows, and quoins. Central door; recessed

bay to right with mullion and transom window, the roof

pitch continues and is supported on 3 slender columns with

decorative arch braces to form verandah at right. 1 flat

topped 4-light dormer above. Projecting canted bay to left

with window at 1st floor opening onto an elaborate timber

balcony supported on large wooden brackets resting on

corbels. Balcony returns onto the west elevation with 1

window opening onto it and decorative gabled projection

framing it. Some standards in balustrade continue to meet

deeply overhanging eaves and form a delicate ornamental

screen. Good carved bargeboards. Central square tower,

rendered with painted margins and bands. A balcony

surrounds it; shallow pyramidal roof. On West elevation

lower projecting bay to left with a corbelled oriel rising

into gable head, main roof breaks forward over window.

Slate roof with red ridge tiles. Large conservatory to

the east.
