Castlepark, Broomgate, Lanark

Castlepark is an asymmetrical villa designed by William Leiper around 1880, showcasing Anglo-Japanese influence. The building features a combination of single-storey with attic sections and two-storey sections. It is constructed of snecked rubble with ashlar dressings around the windows and quoins. The central entrance door is flanked by a recessed bay to the right that includes a mullion and transom window. The roof pitch continues over this bay, supported by three slender columns with decorative arch braces, creating a verandah on the right side. Above, there is a flat-topped four-light dormer.

To the left, a projecting canted bay features a window at the first floor that opens onto an elaborate timber balcony, which is supported by large wooden brackets resting on corbels. This balcony wraps around to the west elevation, where it has a window opening and a decorative gabled projection framing it. The balustrade includes some standards that meet the deeply overhanging eaves, forming a delicate ornamental screen. The villa also boasts well-carved bargeboards.

A central square tower, rendered with painted margins and bands, is surrounded by a balcony and topped with a shallow pyramidal roof. On the west elevation, there is a lower projecting bay to the left with a corbelled oriel that rises into the gable head, while the main roof breaks forward over the window. The roof is finished with slate and red ridge tiles, and there is a large conservatory to the east.
