Description
This is a two-storey villa, built in 1906 by William Leiper, designed in an asymmetrical Arts and Crafts/Shavian Old English style. The house is arranged in an L-shape. It is constructed of red sandstone rubble, with ashlar dressings. The ground floor is of rough-cut stone, while the first floor features harling and mock half-timbering details on a jettied section. The windows are mullioned and transomed at the first floor, with bargeboarded gables and overhanging eaves supported by brackets.
The east-facing elevation, which fronts onto Alma Crescent, has an entrance bay to the right and a broader, slightly recessed gabled bay to the left. An advanced ashlar doorpiece is positioned off-centre to the right, featuring a pointed arch, deeply chamfered mouldings, a hood mould, double-panelled doors, and a deep-set vestibule. Above this, a jettied half-timbered section extends over a five-light window. A bipartite window is located at ground level on the return to the right, and an off-centre bipartite window sits at the first floor. The roof is a gambrel style. A tripartite window occupies the ground floor of the bay to the left, with a small, canted oriel and a jettied half-timbered gablehead breaking the eaves to its left.
The south-facing garden elevation features a full-height canted window that breaks over the eaves in the centre, along with mullioned and transomed windows at ground level (arranged 2-2-2) and timber mullioned windows at the first floor (1-2-1). A polygonal roof tops this section. A recessed bay is present to the right at ground level, with a modern conservatory (dated 1991) abutting it. A bipartite window is located to the right at the first floor. A gabled bay extends to the outer left, with a narrow window at both ground and first floor levels. The gablehead is finished with an offset tiled course, and a wallhead stack breaks the eaves at the apex.
The west-facing side elevation mirrors the arrangement of the south elevation, with a full-height canted window breaking the eaves to the outer right. It has mullioned and transomed windows at ground level (2-2-2) and timber bipartites at the first floor, again topped with a polygonal roof. A recessed bay is positioned to the left at ground level, with a modern conservatory abutting it, and a tripartite window at the first floor. A bipartite window is situated to the outer left at the first floor. A single-storey lean-to projection extends to the outer left, continuing around the north and east returns of the west block, and another bipartite window is located at the first floor above on the west elevation.
The north-facing rear elevation includes a mullioned and transomed bipartite stair window in the re-entrant angle to the left. The lean-to projection continues around a wing that is advanced to the right. The windows are primarily timber, with the addition of some uPVC replacement pivot windows. The roof is tiled in red, with a red sandstone stack on the south side and harling on the north side. The interior has not been inspected.
