Description
This is a two-storey, asymmetrical Arts and Crafts/Shavian Old English villa, designed by William Leiper in 1909, with later additions by W Hunter McNab in 1913. The exterior is mainly harled, with a cream sandstone ashlar doorpiece and dressings. The first floor is jettied. The windows are a mix of timber mullioned and transomed styles on the ground floor, and timber mullioned on the first floor, with bargeboarded gables and bracketted overhanging eaves.
The north (entrance) elevation features an entrance bay to the right and a broad gabled bay to the left. A later single-storey billiard room addition is set to the outer right. The advanced, squared ashlar door bay is off-centre to the right, with a pointed-arch entrance, deep chamfered reveals, a hoodmould, a bracketed lamp above, and a two-leaf boarded door with a half-glazed vestibule door. Above the doorway is a jettied bay with a five-light mullioned window. To the left is a lop-sided gabled bay containing a tripartite ashlar mullioned window at ground level, a small canted oriel with a jettied gablehead that breaks the eaves, and a tall wallhead stack that also breaks the eaves.
The east (side) elevation has full-height canted windows breaking the eaves, with a 2-2-2 window arrangement at ground level (with fixed upper panes) and a 1-2-1 arrangement on the first floor, all beneath a polygonal roof. A recessed bay to the right at ground level has a bracketted lintel below the first-floor window, containing a bipartite window to its left. A bipartite window is located to the right on the first floor. A flat-roofed bay is set into the outer left, with narrow windows at both ground and first floor levels. The gablehead is offset and tiled, with a wallhead stack in the centre, breaking the eaves at its apex.
On the south elevation, full-height canted windows break the eaves to the outer right, again with a polygonal roof. A recessed bay to the left contains a bipartite window to the right and a single window to the left. A tripartite window is situated above on the first floor. A lean-to projection extends to the outer left, continuing around the north return, with a tripartite window to the right on the first floor and a bipartite window to the left.
The rear (west) elevation originally featured a stair window, now partly blocked by a covered stair leading to a flat on the first floor. A later billiard room addition is located on the outer left.
The billiard room addition, situated at the northwest angle, is a semi-octagonal block with a gabled bay to the north, featuring a tall brick stack at the apex and bipartite windows to the chamfered bays. A five-light window is placed on the return to the right.
The windows are multi-pane casements, and the roof is red tiled with corniced, harled stacks. The interior includes a wainscoted hall (where the stair was removed when the villa was converted to flats) and a wainscoted billiard room containing an original ashlar chimneypiece, high, timber-beamed ceilings with some coving.
A rubble boundary wall with ashlar piers surrounds the property.
