Description

Arden is a late 19th-century villa with a flat-roofed extension added in 1916 by Stewart and Paterson. It is a two-storey over basement, three-bay symmetrical building incorporating classical detailing. A single-storey addition was constructed to the east in 1916, and a raised conservatory/verandah extends from the west.

The villa is constructed of stugged and snecked cream sandstone, with bull-faced sandstone to the basement and ashlar dressings. Architectural details include string, lintel, and eaves courses, ashlar mullioned windows, chamfered arrises, and overhanging bracketted eaves.

The south (entrance) elevation features a flight of steps leading to a round-arched doorway flanked by paired pilasters on pedestals with a cornice. The doorway has panelled doors, a plate glass fanlight, and a modern glazed vestibule door. A lean-to timber porch, enclosed with a trellis style frame, abuts the low projecting walls framing the entrance steps. A round-arched window sits above the doorway at first-floor level, with a corbelled cill and a shallow hoodmould. Full-height canted windows flank the entrance, with a stepped string course separating the ground and first-floor windows. A timber conservatory/verandah extends from the southwest corner, raised on a trellis type arcade and with a glazed upper section. A doorway is positioned in the re-entrant angle.

The west elevation has the timber conservatory/verandah extending from the centre to the outer right. Two windows are set to the left at ground level, and two widely spaced windows are at first-floor level. A lower two-storey wing sits to the left, with a window at ground level and a window above that breaks the eaves with a gable supported by timber brackets; a small window is to the right. A single-storey wing is positioned to the left with a doorway.

The windows are sash and case, displaying a variety of glazing patterns, including plate glass in the lower sashes and small panes in the upper sashes. The roof is covered with pended grey slate, featuring a flat-roofed dormer in the centre of the south elevation, and there are sandstone stacks. The 1916 addition is of squared and snecked grey sandstone with an ashlar mullioned window.

The south elevation of the 1916 addition showcases a canted, seven-light mullioned window. The east elevation is blank. The flat roof has a tall sandstone stack in the centre. Original rainwater goods and lead-pane glazing are present. The gate piers are square with ashlar construction and corniced caps.
