Description

The monument to Sir James Fergusson of Kilkerran, located in Wellington Square, Ayr, was sculpted by Sir William Goscombe John in 1910. It features a stepped granite square-plan plinth with a pulvinated band, topped by a bronze figure facing northeast. A bronze foliage and sword rests on the steps of the northeast elevation.

The northeast face of the monument is inscribed with a tribute: "To the Right Honorable Sir James Fergusson of Kilkerran, Baronet. G C S I K C M G C I E LL D Born 1832 - Died 1907. Who served his country faithfully and well from the time when he fought for her in the Crimea to the end of his life. Not only in Parliament and in high places of government but also by work done for his church, his country and his parish. This statue was set up in grateful and affectionate remembrance alike by those of his own country and of lands beyond the seas who knew the man and his labors for the public good."

The northwest face details his military and political career: "Grenadier Guards 1851-1855, present at the battles of Alma and Inkerman. Commanded Ayr and Wigtown militia 1858-68. MP for Ayrshire 1854-57 & 1859-68. Under Secretary Home Department 1867-8. Governor of South Australia 1868-73. Governor of New Zealand 1873-5. Governor of Bombay 1880-85. Under Secretary for Foreign Affairs 1886-91. Postmaster General 1891-92. MP for NE Manchester 1885-1906."

The southeast face lists his local roles: "Captain Royal Company of Archers, DL and JP for county of Ayr, county councillor county of Ayr, parish councillor parish of Dailly, member of school board parishes of Dailly and Crosshill."
