Description
16-18 Academy Street in Ayr is a two-storey and attic, five-bay tenement building dating from around 1780. It is constructed of sandstone rubble with painted margins around the window openings and is part of a terrace.
The southwest elevation, which serves as the entrance, features steps leading up to a central doorpiece that has a cornice, pilasters, and a block pediment. The block pediment includes a central panel and is topped by a timber door with a five-light letterbox fanlight above it. To the right, there are steps leading to a square-headed lower entrance with another timber door. Flanking the entrances on the ground floor are single windows, while the first floor has regular fenestration. The attic is adorned with three single dormers.
The windows are predominantly timber sash and case with plate glass, except for the outer right window on the ground floor, which has four panes, and there are small openings on the sides of the dormers. The roof is covered with grey slate and features coped stacks with circular cans.
The interiors were not seen during the last inspection in 1998.
