Description
The Greenhouse and Walled Garden at Blairquhan was built between 1816 and 1820, with some later alterations. It features an ashlar-coped garden wall, which is brick-lined with stone to the north and brick to the east and west, surrounding an area of approximately 110 by 60 meters. The greenhouse, which faces south, has a large lean-to design and includes a columned, pedimented portico at the center of the north wall. The garden wall has ashlar-coped brick terrace walls that end in corniced, panelled stone piers, which support carved stone urns.
The greenhouse itself dates to around 1820 and has had later additions. It has a central section with an advanced, glazed, tetrastyle Corinthian portico, flanked by long, lower wings built on sandstone base walls. The portico is supported by four painted sandstone Corinthian columns and features an ornamental cast-iron finial. Inside, there are cast-iron brackets and plant shelves that are supported by cast-iron pilasters with decorative floreate detailing in panels. Additionally, there are underground rooms beneath the structure.
