Description

Near Lodge, Blairquhan is an earlier 19th century gate lodge that was extended in the 1930s and later. It is a single-storey and basement structure with two bays, designed in a picturesque L-plan style featuring Tudor detailing. The roof is Italianate with deep overhanging eaves that create the appearance of a broken pediment. To the southeast, there is a two-bay extension, and the ground falls away to reveal a two-storey rear with a central single-bay extension from the 20th century and a forestair.

The front of the lodge is constructed from squared, coursed, tooled sandstone, while the rear is made of random rubble. The southeast and rear extensions are finished in harled masonry, with polished ashlar dressings throughout. There is a base course, and hoodmoulds are present above the stone-mullioned windows with chamfered margins on the principal elevations.

The entrance features a timber-boarded Tudor-arched front door set in a chamfered surround, located in an advanced entrance bay. To the left of the door is a tall octagonal pier with a capped cornice, and to the right is a large, projecting canted window. The two-bay extension on the far right includes one single and one bipartite mullioned window, along with raised quoins and dressings. At the rear, there is a timber-boarded door leading to the basement.

The windows are fitted with 2-pane glazing in timber casements. The building has coupled, diagonally-set square sandstone ashlar stacks with string courses and clay cans, topped by a graded grey slate roof.

The gatepiers consist of two capped, corniced octagonal sandstone ashlar structures. Decorative cast-iron railings connect the northern pier to the gate lodge.
