Description
53 High Street in Ayr is an early 19th century, three-storey, two-bay tenement building with a near rectangular plan. The ground floor has been modernized for a shop, while the High Street elevation features painted ashlar and the Hope Street elevation is finished with painted harl. There are cill courses at the first and second floors, a cornice, and a blocking course. The window margins on the first and second floors are also painted.
On the north elevation, which faces the entrance, there is a central entrance to the shop at ground level, featuring a glazed timber door with a letterbox fanlight and flanking shop windows. The first and second floors have regular window arrangements.
The west elevation, facing Hope Street, includes a blind canted section that turns the corner to the outer left. At the center, there is a modern timber pedimented doorpiece with a single timber door and a narrow letterbox fanlight. This elevation has two windows on each floor, which are irregularly disposed and sized.
The first and second floors on both the High Street and Hope Street elevations have 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with two smaller modern windows added to the Hope Street side. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there is a lamp fitting to the right of the first-floor window on the outer right, above the High Street sign.
The interior was not seen in 1998.
