Description

W G Rowan, 1883, built to replace Old Kirk in Church Square.

Early English Gothic; snecked red sandstone with polished

dressings. Nave with north and south aisles and shallow

transepts. Tower with tall spire at south west. Central door

under pointed arch, with moulded reveals and nook shafts in

shallow gabled projection. Tall 3-light geometric traceried

window above, rising in to the gable head. Nave flanked by

stepped buttresses rising to octagonal turrets with conical

roof. Gabled and stepped buttress to north aisle 3-stage

tower with angle buttresses capped by octagonal pinacles

which clasp the tall facetted spire. Lucarnes between

pinacles at base of spire and on alternate faces above.

Conventional seating plan with good panelled gallery

balustrade, decorative roof trusses good painted frieze and

stars on ceiling.
