Description

2-4 River Terrace in Ayr is a pair of houses built in the earlier 19th century. They are two stories tall and have six bays, arranged in a grouping of four and two, situated on a corner site. The houses are constructed from painted sandstone rubble, which is exposed on the sides and rear, with margins around the openings.

The northeast elevation, which serves as the entrance, features a recessed entrance in the penultimate bay to the left, with a timber door. Above this entrance, there is a single window aligned at the first floor. The remaining three bays have regular fenestration. To the right, there is a lower two-bay section that includes a pilastered and corniced doorpiece on the left, a timber door, and single windows at both the ground and first floors, with a shuttered window at the ground level.

The northwest elevation, facing Auld Brig, consists of four bays. It has a timber door on the outer right, with two single windows to the left and a two-leaf opening at the ground level leading to a canted bay on the outer left.

On the southeast side elevation, there is an infilled entrance at the ground level to the left. The houses feature 12-pane timber windows and have a grey slate roof with stone skews, gablehead stacks, and both circular and polygonal chimney cans.

The interiors were not seen during the last inspection in 1998.
