Description

Shalimar is a detached, asymmetrical mansion house dating from 1868, with alterations made in 1897 and 1900, designed by J.A. Morris. It occupies a corner site and displays Jacobean detailing. The house is constructed from coursed sandstone with a base course, a modillion eaves course featuring rope moulding to the corbel table, a crenellated parapet to the northwest elevation, a stepped ground floor string course to the northeast elevation, crowstepped gables, and ball finials atop various features.

The northwest (entrance) elevation features an advanced, single-storey, canted central entrance porch with a Gibbs surround to the doorpiece. A two-leaf timber door is set within this surround, flanked by oval mouldings above a cross. Balustraded parapets and obelisk finials decorate the angles. Two-light transomed and mullioned arched windows are set within the canted sides to the right. A canted bay extends to the outer right, showcasing mullions in the central faces of the ground and first-floor windows. A hoodmould protects the first-floor window, while corbelled angles define the gable and flanking corbelled turrets with labelmoulds over blind openings. The apex of the gable is finished with finials. A three-light window is present at both ground and first floor to the gabled bay to the left, with a segmental arch above the ground-floor window and a labelmould over a blind arrowslit window in the gable. A corbelled octagonal turret is positioned to the outer left.

The southwest elevation is four-bay, with a single-storey wing projecting to the outer right. An advanced gabled bay to the outer left features three-light windows at ground and first floor, labelmoulds above the openings, and a blind arrowslit in the gable. A corbelled turret is set to the outer left. A canted bay to the ground floor of the penultimate bay to the left has a mullioned window on its central face, while a mullioned, labelmoulded window is positioned at first floor. A corbelled turret marks the right side. A circular-plan turreted bay is recessed between these, with a timber door at ground floor and a window above, which are not aligned. Another single window is at first floor. The crowstepped gabled bay to the right contains single windows at both ground and first floor. The single-storey wing projects to the outer right.

The northeast (Chapelpark Road) elevation is five-bay, including an advanced single-storey wing projecting to the outer left. A central circular-plan turreted entrance bay holds a timber door, with a window above and another at first floor. Blind single openings are present at both ground and first floor to a recessed gabled bay on the right. The penultimate gabled advanced bay displays three-light windows at ground and first floor, while the two bays to the left each contain a single window at both ground and first floor. A slightly advanced single-storey wing completes the left side.

Predominantly plate glass timber sash and case windows are found throughout the house. The roof is slate, with corniced pitch and gablehead stacks, circular and polygonal cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior has not been inspected recently.

Square-plan stone gatepiers mark both entrances, and a coped boundary wall surrounds the site.
