Description

Hartley House, formerly the stables, is a detached classical house built in 1869 and altered in 1906 by J.A. Morris. It is two stories high with an asymmetrical five-bay plan and features a three-stage tower. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and includes a deep base course, a first-floor cill course, an eaves course, and a cornice. The first-floor windows are framed with architraves.

On the northwest elevation, which serves as the entrance, there are steps leading to a prominent central doorpiece with Corinthian pilasters. The entrance features a two-leaf timber door with a letterbox fanlight above it. To the left, there is a bipartite window divided by a pilaster and entablature, also with a fanlight. Above, there is a single window on the first floor. The square-plan tower on the outer left has single windows on the first and second stages, and a bipartite window on the third stage, which includes a central pilaster. The eaves are decorated with a mutule course. To the right at ground level, there are two pairs of bipartite windows, with the left window divided by a pilaster and entablature, and a fanlight above it. The first floor has single windows aligned above these.

The southwest, southeast, and northeast elevations were not visible in 1999. The windows are predominantly plate glass and four-pane timber sash and case. The roof is low-pitched and piended, covered with slate, and features coped wallhead stacks and decorative Egyptian circular cans. The building also has cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen in 1999. The former stables are located at the rear of the property, accompanied by square-plan coped gatepiers and a coped rubble boundary wall that encloses the site.
