Description
Ashgrove House, built in 1888, is an asymmetrical two-storey house located in Ashgrove, Maybole. It features stugged ashlar stone with polished dressings. A set of steps with a stone balustrade leads to an off-centre door that is recessed behind a screen. To the left of the entrance, there is a projecting square tripartite window linked to the screen by a balustraded balcony. The first-floor windows are topped with crow-stepped gableheads.
To the right of the door, there is a three-stage circular tower with a plinth and moulded strings above. Cill courses are present at both the ground and first floors, with string courses above the ground floor extending across the front elevation. The frieze above the first-floor window is decorated with rosettes and blocked flutes, along with the date. The house has a boldly corbelled and castellated parapet, with a small top stage that features an aedicule window, initials in the frieze, and a conical slated roof.
The gabled right bay includes a shallow projecting tripartite window at the ground floor, with a balustrade above, and a bipartite window at the first floor with a decorative pedimented head. The crow-stepped gables are topped with ball finials. The south-west elevation has a semi-circular five-light single-storey window, with a bipartite window above that features a decorative Jacobean head. There is an extensive range at the rear of the house, and the roofs are slated. The interior includes some decorative plasterwork.
