Description
The Castle, located at 2 and 4 High Street in Maybole, is a prominent building likely dating from the early 17th century, with later enlargements made in the 19th century. It features an L-shaped plan and stands four storeys tall, with the staircase situated in the southern wing. The exterior is harled, accented with ashlar dressings, and includes rubble-built, two-storey crowstepped gabled extensions added to the south and west before 1856.
The entrance is located on the north-east elevation, featuring a door set in simply moulded jambs. The first-floor windows are irregularly placed, with one window on the south-east and one enlarged window on the north-east elevation. The second floor has two windows facing north-east and one facing south-east. Large angle turrets project above the second floor at the north-east and north-west corners, each adorned with three windows, a conical cap, and a finial.
There are two attic windows on the north-east side, each flanked by three decorative semi-circles that form pediments, and these windows are positioned beside a large wall-head stack. The south-west side features similarly detailed dormers. The southern stair wing has a corbelled top storey that was formerly a prospect room, complete with an oriel window facing south-west. The building is topped with crow-stepped gables and slate roofs. Surrounding the property are rubble-built garden walls and banded vermiculated gate piers topped with pyramidal caps supported by ball feet.
