Description
Auchtercrag is a detached house located on Commercial Road in Ellon, built in 1894. This 2-storey building features an asymmetrical design with baronial detailing and crow-stepped gables. The exterior is constructed from stugged granite ashlar with polished dressings, and it has chamfered openings and a cill course on the ground floor, while the rear is sneck-harled. The windows are sash and case, with plate glass in the lower sash and multi-pane above.
The main east elevation showcases a central 3-storey tower with an entrance at ground level, accessed through a roll-moulded doorpiece topped with a blind balcony featuring a ball finial. The first floor has a bipartite window, with a string course separating the first and second floors, and single windows on each face of the second floor. The tower is capped with a corbelled, crenellated parapet and an angle turret topped with a fish scale-slated, candle-snuffer roof and finial. To the left, there is a canted 4-light window on the ground and first floors, with a bipartite window in a set-back gable above. The outer left bay is recessed and features an angle turret corbelled below the eaves, with a roof matching the turret described.
On the left side, there is a conservatory with a curved roof and a central arcaded ventilating section raised above. To the right, a square projecting window and a wide, recessed outer bay complete the façade.
The rear of the house is simpler, featuring an off-centre, round-arched stair window and a variety of smaller windows. The north elevation includes a bold projecting stack on the main elevation and a lower wing to the west.
In front of the house, there are four small urns at the top and bottom of the steps on the east side. The gatepiers consist of two massive granite monoliths, each corniced and topped with a ball finial.
