Description
Ollaberry Church and Churchyard features a large classical monument created by sculptor John Forbes in 1754. The monument is designed in the form of an aedicule set against a harl-pointed random rubble wall. It includes a steeply pedimented entablature and engaged, ball-finialled, Corinthian-like columns that frame a slab. This slab displays two armorial panels and an inscription that reads:
INTERRED BELOW THIS MONUMENT WE FIND
OUR VIRTUOUS CHILDREN AS THEY'RE HERE DESI(GNED?)
IN BLOOM OF YOUTH CUTT OF THIS EARTH
FREED FROM THE FORCES OF A CORRUPT AGE
The monument is signed 'John Forbes fecit 1754'.
