Description
The War Memorial on Edinburgh Road in Lauder was built in 1923 to honor those who died in the First World War. It resembles a market cross and features an octagonal granite shaft set on a stepped base with a square plan and chamfered sides. The base is inscribed with the words, "ERECTED IN MEMORY OF THOSE FROM THE PARISH AND BURGH OF LAUDER WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE WAR OF 1914-1918," and the names of the fallen are listed on the sides. At the top of the shaft, there is a sandstone carving of a lion rampant holding a shield that is inscribed with a cross and the dates 1914 - 1918. Additionally, a plaque commemorating those who died in the Second World War has been added to the east side of the base.
