Description

The Croglin War Memorial was erected in 1921 to commemorate the First World War, with later additions for the Second World War. Designed by J H Martindale of Carlisle and built by Messrs J & R Bell, the memorial is situated within a churchyard, close to the church porch. It takes the form of a Celtic cross, consisting of a tapered cross-shaft set upon a substantial, roughly-hewn stone base. The cross-shaft is extensively decorated with Celtic knot motifs. An inscription in incised lettering is carved into the front of the base on an angled tablet, reading: "IN HONOURED MEMORY OF / (SIX NAMES) / WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918 / THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE." A narrower, also angled, tablet on the right side of the base commemorates those who died in the Second World War and is inscribed: "(NAME) / 1939-1945." The memorial is constructed from sandstone.
