Description
The byre, formerly a barn, is located to the north of Croglin Low Hall and is likely from the early 16th century, with a 19th-century extension on the right and a late 19th-century end wall on the left. It features thick walls made of large blocks of red sandstone, which have been slightly raised in height, possibly from materials taken from a demolished tower. The building has a red sandstone slate roof and is two storeys high with four bays, extended by one bay under a common roof. There are two filled ground floor entrances with deeply chamfered lintels, and three plank doors in 19th-century openings, one of which is partly in its original opening. The upper floor has a 19th-century loft door with steps cut into the stonework of the wall below. The left end wall was rebuilt in the late 19th century to create a passage between the former adjoining wing and the original tower. The rear wall has three levels of slit vents, with the lower vents at ground level. At the time of the resurvey, the central part of the roof and part of the rear wall were in a collapsed condition. This building is a rare and early barn that is part of a group of buildings from a similar period.
