Description
The stable block located to the north-west of The Nunnery dates from the early 19th century. It features coursed and squared sandstone rubble walls with raised quoins and ashlar dressings, topped by a hipped green slate roof and ashlar ridge chimney stacks. The building is a single storey with multiple bays, enclosing a courtyard on four sides.
The central entrance is a large elliptical arch with a quoined surround and a carved panel displaying the Aglionby coat of arms above it. To the right, there is a smaller entrance with a 20th-century garage door positioned between the two. The pointed casement windows have trefoil heads and rounded transoms, complete with impost blocks and keystones. Above these windows, round vents are set within raised stone surrounds. The right side wall has square openings, while the left side wall is a blank wall featuring a battlemented parapet. The central entrance also has a reused inscription stone above it, which reads "JOH AGLIONBY/JURISCON SULTUS 1694." Inside, the walls have flat arch entrances and square openings. At the time of the survey, the building was derelict and unoccupied. It is listed partly for its group value with The Nunnery.
