Description
The Church of St John the Baptist is a church built in 1878 by J Howison of Edinburgh, located on a medieval site. It is constructed from rusticated red sandstone ashlar on a chamfered plinth, with a graduated green slate roof. The building features coped gables with cross finials and kneelers. It has a 4-bay nave and a 3-bay chancel, along with a west bellcote, a south porch, and a north vestry. The windows and entrance are designed in a shafted neo-Norman style, characterized by zigzag arches. The west wall includes a clock with an inscription dated 1868 and bells dated 1772. Inside, the church has an open timber roof and early 20th-century fittings. The chancel features a neo-Norman zigzag arch, and the east window contains stained glass by Lavers & Westlake. The walls display colored prints by the Fitzroy Picture Society, and there is a wooden muniment chest along with a small carved graveslab from the 12th century inscribed with "Hisabella."
