Description
12 The Loan in Lauder consists of a pair of single-storey cottages built in the early 18th century and early 19th century. The northern cottage features a more steeply pitched roofline, while the southern cottage appears to be a single cell. The exterior is harled, with the gable ends of the original building made of whinstone rubble.
On the east elevation, there is a single entrance to each cottage, with the right cottage having a boarded timber door. The west elevation has two windows for each cottage, with the outer right window of the left cottage being particularly small. A harled wall adjoins at right angles to the right of the right cottage.
The north elevation includes a small brick and harled lean-to. The south elevation has a single small blocked window in the gable end.
Both cottages feature 12-pane timber sash and case windows and have grey slate roofs. The northern cottage has a pair of rubble and coursed rubble gable end stacks with band courses and water tabling, while the southern cottage has a hexagonal can and a coped coursed rubble gable end stack.
The interior was not inspected in 1998.
