Description

6 The Loan in Lauder is a terrace of three single-storey and attic cottages, dating from the earlier to mid 19th century. The cottages feature breaking-eaves gabled dormers on the principal (north) elevation and are harled with painted stone dressings, showcasing architraved openings.

On the north elevation, No 5, to the left, has a passageway leading to the ground floor of the outer left bay, where the terrace was formerly separated. It has a central entrance with a panelled timber door that includes glazed upper panels, a single window to the left, and two windows to the right. The gabled dormers with timber finials are located above the second and fifth bays from the left, with the fifth bay appearing to have previously belonged to No 6. No 6, to the right, features an entrance with a panelled timber door with glazed upper panels, a window to the right, and a gabled dormer above, although the timber finial is missing. No 7, on the outer right, has an entrance with a plain timber door to the left of centre, a window to the left, a gabled dormer with a timber finial above, and a small window to the outer right.

The south elevation has single-storey lean-to additions on each side. The east elevation adjoins No 4 The Loan, while the west elevation adjoins No 8 The Loan.

The principal elevation mainly features 12 timber sash and case windows for No 5, with No 6 having 2-pane timber sash and case windows, and No 7 having 4-pane timber sash and case windows. The cottages have a grey slate roof, with a pair of harled ridge stacks on No 5 (one with a band course and one coped), a brick stack with a band course between Nos 6 and 7, and round cans.

The interior of No 5 has been inspected and retains an original fireplace with a plain droved stone surround.
