Description
Gardener's Cottage and Greenhouse at Cawderstanes dates from around 1892 and has had later additions and alterations. It features a fine 13-bay greenhouse arranged in a 5-3-5 configuration, which is attached to a single-storey cottage with an attic. The cottage has a 3-bay layout and a full-height gabled wing at the rear, forming an L-plan.
The southeast elevation of the greenhouse is full-width and symmetrical, adjoining the rear wing of the cottage. It has a gabled entrance that projects at the centre, flanked by 5-bay ranges on either side. Decorative finials and brattishing adorn the structure, and ridge vent cogs and levers are still in place.
The cottage is constructed from squared and snecked, bull-faced pink sandstone with ashlar dressings. It features bull-faced quoins and long and short surrounds around the openings. On the northeast elevation, there are remains of a part-glazed, lean-to porch centered at the ground level, which contains a glazed timber door and a plate glass fanlight. Single windows are located in the bays flanking the entrance, with box dormers aligned above. To the right, there is a single-storey addition with a small, round-arched window offset to the left.
The southeast side elevation shows a gable end with single windows at ground level in both bays, and an attic opening centered above, with the greenhouse attached to the left. The northwest side elevation features a gable end on the left with a timber door offset to the right of center and a small window to the right. A single-storey, mono-pitched addition projects to the left, with a single window centered in the gablehead. To the right, there is an irregularly fenestrated 6-bay wing, along with a single-storey block on the outer right. The windows predominantly have 4-pane glazing in timber sash and case frames, although some modern glazing is present. The roofs are covered with grey slate, featuring stone-coped skews and gabled, louvred ridge vents on the rear wing. There are apex stacks, a corniced stack to the side, and various chimney cans. The interior was not seen in 1999.
