Description

The weather vane at Cawderstanes is likely from the late 19th century. It is made of stugged pink sandstone and has a square plan. The structure features a stepped pedestal and a tapering square shaft with crenellated detail at the base. Above the shaft are carved motifs, although some are missing on the southwest side. Sculptured animal faces, which are also missing on the southwest side, are positioned above the carved chains that drape from the angles. These chains are suspended from clenched heraldic gauntlets located beneath a carved wreath frieze. At the top, there is an iron weather vane that sits on a circular cap, which is partially missing.
