Description

Edrington Castle Mill is a former flour mill built in 1789, with later additions and alterations. It is a two-storey building with an attic, featuring a four-bay rectangular plan and a lower three-bay L-plan wing attached to the side. The exterior is made of harl-pointed rubble sandstone, which is weathered in parts, with tooled rubble dressings. The building has tooled quoins and long and short surrounds to the openings, along with flush cills.

On the northwest elevation, the main block is to the left and has a doorway at ground level that is offset to the left of center. There is a roofless lean-to addition to the right, and a large segmental-arched opening at ground level on the outer right, which has a keystone dated '1789(?)'. The first floor has boarded openings in all bays, and there are three irregularly spaced squat louvred attic openings above. The lower three-bay range to the right features single openings at both the ground and first floors, with an inscribed plaque offset to the left of center and squat, bricked-up attic openings above.

The southwest elevation shows a projecting gable end with boarded openings centered at all floors, and a dovecot opening in the gablehead offset to the left of center. The projecting wing to the right has a blind elevation.

On the southeast elevation, the principal block is to the right and has a large segmental-arched opening at ground level to the left, with boarded openings at ground level to the right and blocked openings at the first floor on the outer right. To the left, there is a flush, gabled addition with boarded openings centered at both the ground and first floors, and a partially bricked-up attic opening aligned above. The full-height wing recessed to the outer left has blocked openings.

The principal block has a grey slate roof, while the lower block has a pantiled roof that is partially missing, with stone-coped skews.

Inside, the mill features rubble walls, timber joists between floors, and an open timber roof. A timber stair provides access to the upper floor, and milling machinery remains in place, complete with numerous cogs and drives interlocked.
