Description
The Paxton Brick and Tile Works is a former kiln block built in the 1830s. It is a single-storey structure with a rectangular plan and three bays, featuring battered walls. The outer elevations are made of squared sandstone rubble, while the inner linings are red brick. The building has rubble quoins and polychrome dressings around its arched openings.
On the northwest elevation, which serves as the entrance, there are three regularly spaced round-arched chambers situated between lean-to buttresses. The northeast, southeast, and southwest elevations are blank with no openings.
The roof of the building is missing or broken, and trees have begun to grow from within since 1999. Inside, the kiln block contains brick-lined, barrel-vaulted chambers with small arched openings at the ground level towards the rear, and the floors are made of earth.
