Description

Butterwell, located on South Street in Gavinton, is a pair of mid-19th century houses that have undergone later alterations and additions. The buildings are two-storey structures with three bays, connected by single-storey wings at the center; Southview is to the east and Butterwell to the west. Southview is harled with rendered margins, while Butterwell features rubble with droved ashlar quoins and dressings on its north elevation, and harl-pointed stugged sandstone with droved ashlar dressings on its south elevation. Southview has strip pilaster quoins, and Butterwell has flush quoins on its two-storey section, along with an eaves course on the south elevation.

On the north elevation facing South Street, the single-storey wing of Butterwell is longer than that of Southview. Southview has a boarded door at the center of its wing, flanked by a window on each side. The two-storey bays have a window on each floor. Butterwell features a window in the bay to the left of its single-storey wing, with a narrow window immediately to the right. The center bay is blank, and to the right is a panelled door with a two-pane rectangular fanlight above. The center of the two-storey bays has a stair window, with a window on each floor of the bay to the left and a blinded window on each floor of the bay to the right.

On the south elevation, Southview has a window in the outer bays of its single-storey wing, with the center bay left blank. The two-storey section has a panelled door at the center with a plate glass letterbox fanlight above, and a window at the first floor. There are windows on each floor of the flanking bays. Butterwell features a modern glazed door with a rectangular plate glass fanlight above at the center of its single-storey wing, with windows in the flanking bays. A modern platformed conservatory is located at the center, along with a modern platformed addition to the outer right. There is also a modern panelled deep-set door with a glazed upper section and a two-pane letterbox fanlight above, set in an advanced ashlar corniced doorpiece, with a window at the first floor above. Each flanking bay has a window on each floor, with corniced margins on the ground floor windows.

The windows on Southview are four-pane timber sash and case, while the north elevation features twelve-pane timber sash and case windows, except for the first floor in the bay to the left, which has a uPVC window. The south elevation has uPVC pivoting windows. The roof is slate, and there are brick stacks, including wallhead stacks on the two-storey gable ends to the east and west.

The interior was not seen in 1995.
