Description
Grenville, located on The Green in Gavinton, is an early 19th-century building that has undergone later alterations and additions. It is a two-storey structure with five bays, featuring first-floor windows that break the eaves. The building is constructed from sandstone rubble with droved and some stugged ashlar dressings on the south elevation, while the west elevation of the house is also sandstone rubble. The former bakehouse on the west elevation has a pebbledash finish with ashlar dressings.
On the south elevation, which faces The Green, the bays are grouped in a 3-2 arrangement. There is a modern glazed door at the center of the three-bay group, topped by a plate glass rectangular fanlight. Above this, there is a gabled window on the first floor, with a window on each floor of the flanking bays. To the left of the two-bay group, there is a window on each floor, and a rendered gabled window on the first floor. A modern lean-to conservatory is located at ground level in the bay to the right, with a window above on the first floor.
The west elevation features six bays, with a gabled blank bay at the outer right. The remaining bays are arranged in a 3-2 grouping, with the three-bay group slightly set back. There is a boarded window in the center of the three-bay group and another in the bay to the right, along with a boarded door in the bay to the left. Additionally, there is a boarded window in the bay to the left of the two-bay group and a boarded door in the bay to the right.
The north elevation was not seen in 1995. The building has uPVC windows and a slate roof, which includes a brick wallhead stack on the east elevation and a brick stack at the ridge. There is also a truncated stack for the bakehouse.
The interior was not seen in 1995.
