Melrose Including Boundary Walls, Chiefswood Road, Former Dingleton Hospital Boiler House

Melrose, located on Chiefswood Road, is a former boiler house and incinerator block of Dingleton Hospital, designed by Peter Womersley in 1977. This tall, four-bay building has a rectangular plan and showcases a monolithic Modernist style, constructed from high-quality timber shuttered concrete. The structure features three graduating low-pitched sections that extend to the south elevation, along with a circular metal flue set in a concrete footing at the central section. The north elevation is modular, consisting of three recessed pyramidal sections that are backed by louvres and separated by slender concrete verticals. A cantilevered sloping overhang leads to the east, and there is low-level glazing in the central pitched section, which contains a mess room with a toilet and shower. The building is prominently located beside the road on a steep hillside.
