Description
5 Free Church Place in Melrose is a former Free Church School built in 1844. This two-storey, five-bay building has a rectangular plan and a symmetrical front, set back from the road behind a rectangular garden plot.
The principal (north) elevation features squared rubble with polished ashlar dressings, chamfered margins, and square Tudor-hoodmoulds above the doors and ground floor windows. The slightly advanced central gable has two entrances, which were originally for boys and girls, each with timber doors and large margined fanlights above. The first floor windows are narrower than those on the ground floor and have gablets. The piended roof is covered with slate and has end chimney stacks with octagonal cans. The windows are fitted with multi-pane glazing in timber sash and case frames, although some have been replaced. There are also cast iron rainwater goods with ornamental ties.
The interiors, which were partially observed in 2016, have been remodelled following the building's conversion from a school to residential use.
