Description

Tweedbank is a classical villa built between 1805 and 1806, with later additions. It is a two-storey building with a basement and attic, featuring three bays and an entrance front facing north. The central door is approached by railed steps and has a moulded architrave and a mutuled cornice. The bays are divided by rusticated pilasters, with a mutuled eaves-course and a pediment over the central bay. The roof is piended and slated, with rectangular corniced stacks at the flanks.

To the south, the original house remains largely unaltered except for the right-hand bay. The central bay is advanced and pedimented, and a projecting wing was added to the left side in the mid-19th century, featuring a three-window canted bay and a piended roof. The attic has two piended dormers.

An east wing, built of concrete blocks and also with a piended slated roof, was added in 1946 by Dick Peddie and MacKay, replacing flanking screen walls with arched pedimented doorways, one of which was relocated to the walled garden.

Inside, there is fine plasterwork in the oval drawing room, which extends into the canted bay, although some other rooms have been altered.

The walled garden features stone on the exterior and a brick-lined interior. It includes a single-storey gabled stable and a two-storey piend-roofed coach and tacksman's house, which has an external stair over a stone water cistern. The elevation facing the street is harled, with windows replaced in steel, while the stone elevations and timber sash and case windows face the garden.

The stone boundary walls and gatepiers include a ha-ha that dates to the mid-20th century.
