Description
Old Belford House in Morebattle is a late 17th century, two-storey, four-bay former house designed in a T-plan. It features a crow-stepped northeast gable and a steeply pitched roof. The building is constructed from harled sandstone rubble, accented with squared red sandstone dressings and margins. The windows are arranged irregularly and have either chamfered or rounded architraves. There are three separate doors providing access to the southwest and northeast sections, as well as the northwest wing.
The principal elevation faces west and includes a later (likely 19th century) segmental-arched vehicle entrance that has been infilled with timber boarding. To the left, there are plate glass windows and a modern door, while to the right, there is a stable door. The building has four windows, some of which are glazed, and a stable door on the east elevation of the north wing. Many windows are either boarded up or fitted with plate glass.
On the east gable, there is a rubble stack topped with a small cope, and the roof is covered with corrugated iron. The building has cast-iron rainwater goods.
Inside, the house has been gutted, with the first floor and stairs removed, leaving only traces of original features. The room on the west side, likely the original kitchen, has a very wide chimney breast and a smaller 18th century chimneypiece and flue built into the center. There are remains of a chimneypiece on the northeast gable at the first floor level.
