Lodge, Hydro Hotel, Innerleithen Road, Peebles

The Lodge at the Hydro Hotel on Innerleithen Road in Peebles was designed by John Starforth in 1881. This small, single-storey building has a picturesque T-plan shape and features gabled roofs with elaborate bargeboards and Jacobean details. Constructed from red sandstone, the lodge is made of squared and snecked rubble with ashlar dressings. It has segmental-arched openings with stop-chamfered reveals, overhanging eaves with exposed rafters, and hipped gableheads.

The south (front) elevation consists of three bays, with a central projecting gabled porch that has a finial. The porch is supported by elaborately carved timber columns with strapwork details, set on later brick bases. The openwork gablehead and carved bargeboards enhance its decorative appeal. The entrance features a plain boarded door with a plate glass fanlight, flanked by tripartite windows.

On the west elevation, there is another tripartite window beneath a piended gablehead that also has a carved bargeboard. The east elevation showcases a shallow projecting bay with tripartite windows and a similar piended gablehead with a carved bargeboard. There is a later flat-roofed extension in the re-entrant angle.

The north (rear) elevation features a piended gablehead with three windows, which include 4-pane and plate glass timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and topped with decorative iron cresting. A central octagonal stack rises from the roof, complemented by ornamental gutterheads and brackets.
