Description

Firgrove Lodge, located at Argyle and Bute Hospital on Hospital Road in Lochgilphead, dates from the later part of the 19th century. This two-storey, three-bay house is designed in a lodge style with an L-shaped plan and features gabled sections. The principal elevation has an advanced gabled section with decorative detailing on the porch, constructed from snecked stone with long and short red sandstone dressings and quoins.

On the southwest (principal) elevation, there is a central door with an advanced pitched porch that includes timber bargeboards and a king post, as well as pierced timber detailing in the gable of the porch. Below the porch roof, there is a timber arch on the southwest and northwest sides, with pierced timber detailing in the spandrels. The porch is supported by timber posts that rest on one circular red sandstone column and two semi-circular red sandstone pilasters. To the left, there is a bipartite window on the ground floor, with a dormer window above it on the first floor. The wing to the right is slightly advanced, featuring a central bipartite window on the ground floor and another bipartite window above.

The northwest elevation is a plain gable elevation. The northeast elevation has an advanced wing to the left with a later lean-to, and a section set back to the right, which includes a door to the left and a window to the right. The southeast elevation features a gabled section to the left with a small first-floor window to the right, along with a bipartite ground floor window to the right and a centrally located first-floor dormer window above.

The building predominantly has plate glass glazing, with four-pane timber sash and case windows on the southeast side, complemented by red sandstone mullions. There is a rooflight at the rear and a timber door. The steeply pitched gableheads and dormers add to the architectural character of the lodge.
